About Starboard
Starboard is a mission-driven maritime intelligence platform supporting governments, defence agencies, and critical-infrastructure operators across NATO and FVEYs countries.
We operate where operational reality, national security, and complex procurement intersect. Our work supports decisions that protect undersea cables, ports, energy infrastructure, and sovereign maritime domains.
Following our successful Series A, we are scaling globally and investing in marketing as a strategic influence function - not a demand factory.
This role is central to that shift.
The Role:
As our Marketing Director, you will evolve Starboard’s marketing function into a strategic enterprise influence engine. You’ll be responsible for building brand authority, expanding engagement within priority accounts, and positioning Starboard as a trusted partner across Defence & Intelligence (D&I) and Critical Maritime Infrastructure (CMI).
This is a hands-on role, suitable for someone who enjoys strategic and execution work.

What You Will Do
- Lead Starboard’s global marketing strategy across Defence & Intelligence and Critical Maritime Infrastructure.
- Shift marketing from lead generation to an influence-led, enterprise and government-focused model.
- Design and run account-based marketing for named accounts, priority programmes, and long-cycle deals.
- Build global credibility through thought leadership, PR, and policy-aware communications, with a strong focus on the US and UK.
- Partner closely with Sales, Product, and Exec to support complex bids, partnerships, and multi-year contracts.
- Build and scale the marketing function, including team design, agencies, and marketing operations.
What We Are Looking For
- 10+ years in enterprise, B2B or B2G marketing, ideally within technology, defence, intelligence, or critical infrastructure.
- Proven experience leading ABM and supporting complex, multi-stakeholder enterprise or government deals.
- Strong commercial judgement and experience working directly with Sales on long procurement cycles.
- Credibility with senior government, defence, or regulated-industry audiences.
- Experience operating at executive level, with the ability to remain hands-on when needed.
- International marketing experience, particularly in a scaling tech company entering the US or Europe.
Why This Role:
This role offers the opportunity to shape a global marketing function from the ground up inside a company with real operational impact.
- You'll be working in one of the fastest growing tech companies in NZ
- High ownership, high trust and execution role with direct access to the executive team
- Opportunity to grow and lead a marketing function tackling problems of real world impact
Preference is given to applicants willing to be based in Wellington, NZ.
Starboard’s leadership, engineering, and product teams are anchored here, close to Five Eyes partners and Pacific maritime priorities. You will be working directly with decision-makers, not through layers, in our CBD office.
If this is not possible, we will still consider strong applications from NZ and Eastern Australia.
Wellington offers a high-trust, low-noise environment to do serious work with global relevance - while maintaining close operational ties to the UK, US and allied markets.
For those that require it, Relocation support is available.
Eligibility (Strict Requirement)
Due to the nature of our work with restricted data, applicants must:
- Have held citizenship for 10+ years in one of the following: NZ, AU, CA, UK, or US.
- Be willing to undergo a security/police check.
