Starboard Maritime Intelligence builds mission-critical technology that helps governments and maritime operators understand what’s happening at sea - in real time.

We combine advanced data products, geospatial intelligence, and scalable cloud platforms to solve complex, real-world problems.

This is an opportunity to join a mission-driven engineering team where your work directly supports maritime security, safety, and intelligence outcomes.

The Role

We’re looking for an Intermediate Software Engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, cares about code quality, and likes working across the full product lifecycle.

You’ll work closely with engineers, product, and operations to help keep our platform robust, secure, and scalable – from design and implementation through to deployment and operations.

In short: we want someone who produces great work and gets things done.

You’ll Be a Good Fit If You

  • Have hands-on experience with cloud-based systems and scalable architectures
  • Are comfortable working with Kubernetes, Terraform, GKE, and GitHub Actions
  • Have experience building and operating software in a cloud-native environment
  • Understand (or are keen to learn) security and compliance frameworks such as NZISM
  • Have exposure to site reliability practices – monitoring, failure handling, and automation
  • Are strong in server-side development – we use Go, Postgres, and some Python on Linux
  • Communicate clearly – whether that’s in code reviews, docs, bug reports, or discussions

Nice to Have

  • Experience with geospatial data or GIS systems
  • Knowledge of GraphQL and/or REST APIs
  • Experience with unit and integration testing
  • Exposure to large-scale datasets
  • Some familiarity with frontend tools – JavaScript, React, Redux, Leaflet

What Success Looks Like

  • Writing clean, reliable, performant code
  • Contributing to multiple projects across the platform
  • Improving reliability and scalability over time
  • Sharing ideas and contributing to Starboard’s technical direction
  • Participating in an operations/on-call rotation when required

Security & Eligibility

This role involves working with restricted data. You must be willing to undergo a basic security check, including a police check.

You must also:

  • Be a NZ citizen (10+ years), or
  • Hold a NZ Residency Class Visa, ideally with citizenship in the UK, USA, Canada, or Australia for 10+ years

Why Starboard

  • Work on genuinely interesting, real-world problems
  • A smart, collaborative, low-ego engineering team
  • Modern cloud stack and strong technical standards
  • Flexible working style that supports life outside work
