About Splash

Our mission is to bring the joy of music making to everyone, and we’ve been pioneering the intersection of artificial intelligence and music since 2017. We approach Gen AI Music in an ethical manner, working with artists rather than against them.

We’ve made significant strides reshaping the way artists and fans connect, particularly through our innovative experiences on Roblox, which have captivated millions of young users.

With support from renowned investors such as Amazon's Alexa Fund, Khosla Ventures and King River Capital, Splash is on a path of rapid growth. We're expanding our diverse team of talented musicians, engineers, and creatives who share our passion for pushing the boundaries of what's possible in music and AI.

The Role:

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on VP of Engineering to lead our technical team and oversee technical vision. In this role you will work closely with the CEO and leadership team to ensure fast prototyping and scalable development of our portfolio of products including AI Models and Tools, Roblox games and future facing products. You will lead a highly talented team of product developers and machine learning engineers who have niche skill sets in music and audio. As a small team, we expect the right person to manage product roadmaps but also have capability to be on the tools where required - leading by example, reviewing code and assisting with technical challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the technical vision and roadmap, aligning with our strategic goals
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a small team of ML engineers and product developers, fostering a culture of collaboration, fast prototyping and constant improvement
  • Oversee the end-to-end product development lifecycle, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery
  • Provide direction and oversee the integration of Generative AI Music models into our products, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience for our users
  • Work closely with Product, Go-To-Market and Operations teams to ensure cohesive and efficient project execution with users always front of mind
  • Manage resources, budgets, and timelines to optimise productivity and achieve milestones
  • Lead technical recruitment of talent in Australia and the US, managing teams as we grow while being conscious of varying budgets during growth phases and funding rounds.
  • Maintain high standards of software quality through best practices and code reviews
  • Address technical issues promptly to ensure minimal disruption to operations
  • Communicate technical concepts and progress clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies with a focus on consumer music tools, identifying opportunities for innovation
  • Conduct performance reviews, provide support and guidance to enhance code quality and programming proficiency
  • Foster a culture of teamwork and respectful communication within the team

Requirements:

  • 10+ years Engineering experience, with 5+ years in a Senior Engineering or Lead role within a startup or high-growth environment
  • Experience working with small teams and new projects/product builds, ideally having shipped multiple consumer products
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages and development frameworks - Python and Javascript advantageous
  • A balance of strategic management and hands on development skills - ideally 50/50 in your most recent position
  • Extensive knowledge of rapid prototyping for consumer products in music, entertainment or gaming industries
  • Approach product development with a goal of delivering a working prototype as early as possible and then improving with iterative changes
  • A passion for solving complicated problems and learning new skills
  • Can take feedback well, and understands that changes in product direction will happen regularly - we practise direct feedback, failing fast and adapting our product quickly
  • Bring a deep understanding of software engineering and contribute to the establishment of best practices.
  • Passion for music and technology

Nice to Have:

  • Background in Music Tech or Gaming
  • Knowledge of Deep Learning, ML and data science

What to Expect:

  • Your opportunity to make your mark in an early-stage startup, acting as an integral part of the visionary team, shaping the technology and products we bring to market
  • Work closely with our CEO, who brings a wealth of experience from previous roles at SoundCloud, Spotify, Twitch, and YouTube.
  • Be part of a talented and dynamic team that values initiative and imagination.
  • We offer a competitive salary and remote/flexible work options. Work remotely or from our office hub in Fortitude Valley, Queensland, Australia.
  • Join a company backed by leading investors, including Amazon’s Alexa Fund, Khosla Ventures, BITKRAFT Ventures, and King River Capital.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

Music has the incredible ability to bridge divides and bring people together, regardless of their background or identity. Like the industry we work within, diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. We actively seek out and welcome voices from all backgrounds and believe that diverse perspectives fuel our creativity and drive success.
